On April 29, 1874, the Empire Club was defeated by the White Sox by a score of 30-9. This was the third of four straight defeats that the Chicagos laid on the champions. In those four defeats, the Empires lost by an aggregate score of 81-25. After the game, according to E.H. Tobias, Nick Young stated that the Empires' "batting abilities were first-class and that with plenty of practice they would make a most excellent team."
Let's just give old Nick, pictured above, the benefit of a doubt and say that he meant it as a compliment.
