President Lucas said yesterday that as the players of the St. Louis Union Club had won the championship of the Union Association, he would give them a benefit in the shape of a game at the Union grounds between either the St. Louis and Bostons, or St. Louis and Cincinnati Unions. It will be played as soon as possible after the St. Louis return from Cincinnati on October 21.-St. Louis Globe-Democrat, October 10, 1884
Well, that's nice and all but, if I was a member of the Maroons, I think I'd just rather have the cash and not have to play the game. This is kind of like having to pay for your own trophy.
