We interrupt our countdown of the top twenty games in the history of 19th century St. Louis baseball to note the passing of Eric Hobsbawm. He was a terrible historian, a horrible writer and a worse human being.
His death puts me in mind of Hunter Thompson's obituary of Richard Nixon, wherein the good doctor wrote that Nixon was "a swine of a man and a jabbering dupe...[He] was so crooked that he needed servants to help him screw his pants on every morning...He was scum." And so too was Hobsbawm.
It may be uncharitable to say but he will not be missed. Good riddance.
