Lucas actually did a pretty good job of setting things straight in the press but that didn't stop the rumors from flying around. Combine that with Sullivan's activities and it's kind of tough to really figure out who Lucas was interested in, who he was targeting and who signed when.

But we're pretty much at the end of all of that activity. By the end of November, Lucas had what he thought was his team in place. Of course, it wasn't that easy and he would lose some of the guys he thought he had under contract. The bottom line, however, is that most of the work of putting the club together was done in November of 1883.Jeffrey Kittelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02367989375750209078noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5985668569918053928.post-80076924803194488722011-04-16T17:14:19.617-05:002011-04-16T17:14:19.617-05:00This is Jimmy Woulfe, who actually flunked trials ...This is Jimmy Woulfe, who actually flunked trials with Cincinnati and Pittsburgh of the American Association in 1884.

He probably could have demonstrated an inability to hit in the weaker Union Association as well, but the outcome of his signing with the Maroons will follow in a short while.David Ballnoreply@blogger.com
